Pet Insurance Australia’s Storm Safety Guide

Storm Anxiety in Pets

Pet Insurance Australia (PIA) advises pet owners to be cautious during stormy autumn weather. Nadia Crighton, a PIA spokesperson, highlights the risk of storm-related injuries in pets, especially due to storm-induced anxiety known as storm-phobia.

Symptoms of anxiety in pets vary and may include:

  • Rapid or excessive panting
  • Yawning
  • Licking
  • Pacing
  • Drooling
  • Trembling
  • Vocalization
  • Destructive Behavior

Seeking Veterinary Assistance

Pet owners are urged to consult veterinarians if they suspect their pets suffer from storm anxiety. Prompt intervention can prevent potential harm to animals.

“There are various treatment options available for pets distressed by storms and the associated static electricity,” mentions Crighton.

Ensuring Pet Safety During Storms

Apart from storm-phobic pets, all pets should receive additional attention during wild and unpredictable weather. Providing adequate, secure shelter becomes crucial, especially during high wind and hailstorm conditions.

“Storms can strike suddenly, so assumptions about weather conditions may drastically change throughout the day,” Crighton advises.

She also suggests inspecting trees and securing pet shelters away from potential dangers like fallen branches or large hailstones.

Precautionary Measures for Pet Safety

Daily checks on cat-flaps to prevent obstruction by branches and creating a ‘safe room’ indoors during predicted destructive storms are recommended by Crighton.

Maintaining updated microchip and registration information with local councils assists in quickly locating lost pets in case of storm-related incidents.

“Fences can get damaged, gates might blow open, and pets tend to get lost during storms. Often, people forget to update their pets’ microchip information, and this oversight can delay reuniting lost pets with their owners,” emphasizes Crighton.

Making these changes can help organize the piece better while addressing sentence length and passive voice issues. If you need further adjustments, feel free to ask!
